Vintage African Tsonga & Pedi Tribal Clay Pot Handcrafted in South Africa
Handcrafted in the Northern Province of South Africa, this Pot is made by a group of Tsonga and Pedi people I worked with during my travels. The intricate design is typical of the traditional design on the clay houses in the area, which is now threatened by cement homes. The design will never leave the culture and is carried on through this work.
I'm told the pots are based on the original Khoikhoi people, one of the oldest groups in Southern Africa.
The 3 handles/lugs on the pot were made so that the pot could be tied onto animals for travel.
