African Royal Kuba Belt Headband/Headdress Antique Congo D.R.C.

This antique Royal Kuba Belt Headband was handcrafted in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and it is a late 19th to early 20th century. This royal belt was also used a headdress to be placed on the forehead and tied in the back.

The belt/headband is made starting with a base of tightly woven raffia, cowrie shells and beads are intricately woven onto the base in traditional patterns and designs. Cowrie Shells are placed on the red and brown background made of raffia and red cotton with intricate knotting between each shell with knotted raffia extensions for tying on the body or head.
