African Copper Art Relief Tribal Mother & Son 15" X 23"
African Copper Art Mother and Son, handcrafted in the Congo D.R.C., this 3 dimensional, relief, hammered work of art shows daily life as seen by the artist, as in this picture of a tribal mother comforting her son. Her beautiful dress is intricately detailed along with exquisite detailing of her features and jewelry. The intricate texturing of the son's hair is perfection. The mother's stool, basket with fish, mud-brick thatched home and palm tree are all well represented in this unique copper work of art.
Due to the abundance of copper in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, working with it as art has been a popular use, as nothing is really discarded. Large sheets of copper from the mines are flattened so that the artist has a base to draw the image on; the copper images are then hammered and fired until the art is clear and complete. The sheets of copper have scratches and/or indentations which the artist works around and makes it a part of the art.
