Vintage Makonde Carved Body Mask on Stand - Tanzania
Handcrafted in Tanzania, this traditional Ceremonial Body Mask is used in a Rite of Passage for young men. The Body Mask is fastened onto the body by string pulled through the holes in the sides of the Mask. The Male Dancers mimic female movements during the Ceremony which represents empathy for women giving birth. It is also referred to as a Fertility Body Mask.
Stands handmade and custom for each Body Mask as they are all unique. The Mask fits securely on the iron stand, but can easily be removed from the stand. The Mask is not sold separately from the stand.
